ThrombUS+ Hosts First Conference in Thessaloniki

On 17 September 2026, ThrombUS+ held its first scientific conference at the Amphitheatre of Papageorgiou General Hospital in Thessaloniki, bringing together clinicians, researchers, patients, and members of the public for an event on deep vein thrombosis detection and the future of wearable monitoring technology.

The conference, titled “Lower Limb Thrombosis: Early Recognition and Diagnosis,” was organised by Papageorgiou General Hospital, SciGen Technologies, and Praxicon Events, and held in hybrid format, with participants attending both in person and online. The event was conducted in Greek and open to healthcare professionals and the wider public.

A comprehensive look at DVT

The programme was structured around four thematic pillars: an introduction to DVT and who is at risk, the patient experience, the ThrombUS+ technology and its clinical potential, and a forward-looking discussion on what it would take to bring a new medical device into routine hospital practice.

Clinical presentations were delivered by specialists covering DVT diagnosis, vulnerable patient groups — including surgical, oncological, and hospitalised patients — and the pathway from symptom onset to diagnosis and treatment. Prof. Michail Potoupnis, Professor of Orthopaedics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, opened the scientific programme with an introduction to why thrombosis remains a critical clinical challenge today.

 

 

ThrombUS+ technology

Project coordinator Prof. Eleni Kaldoudi, of the Democritus University of Thrace, presented the origins and vision of ThrombUS+, situating the project within the broader landscape of European research and innovation in medical technology. Project manager Dr. Stylianos Didaskalou then gave a detailed presentation on how the ThrombUS+ system works, what it measures, and the current state and limitations of the technology. A further session addressed the practical and regulatory requirements for transitioning a novel device from prototype to clinical deployment.

The ThrombUS+ prototype was on display at the exhibition stand throughout the event, with dedicated demonstration slots at registration, during the coffee break, and at the close of the programme, giving attendees the opportunity to see the device up close and ask questions directly to the development team.

On the same day, the project received coverage on Greek public broadcaster ERT, with Prof. Kaldoudi explaining the technology and its clinical significance to a national audience.

Looking ahead

The conference closed with a session of conclusions and an expert panel open to audience questions, moderated by M. Bigaki, with panellists including Prof. Kaldoudi, Prof. Potoupnis, D. Karamanos, A. Sotiriadou, K. Papavasiliou, and K. Tigiropoulos. The device is expected to be ready for clinical validation by summer 2027.
